Linux Perspective

Using *debianKnoppix* I created lots of file system bookmarks in Konq. Getting a handle on the nix file layout is a significant task.

Having a separate set of bookmarks (via Mozilla) for the web is nice. I want separate favorite sets for the web and the file system. There are likely other spaces of use, but the slow creep of IE through the OS is heading this direction.

In fact, I'm a satisfied user of Hyperionics file dialogue and explorer extension that provides dedicated file system favorites and recently used folders in Windows.

A UI Design Challenge

Jason Lanier puts forth a very appropriate challenge for UI designers: For instance, could you design a search engine that would encourage people to do more complex searches than they can do on a service like Google today, but still do them easily? There have been a couple works on query construction that have explored this space. One involved a set of tabs for specifying keywords and meta data attributes, but it's still a whorthwhile challenge.... or it would be if google offered boolean queries.

The mozilla googlebar project would happily take an advanced search panel, dropping down from the toolbar to overaly the content window. Any takers? |||
