Arbitrary Intelligence During a bit of cocktail party talk this last weekend, I summarized my view of AI quite succintly as Arbitrary Intelligence. I am a firm believer in cognitive modeling as a better path to computer intelligence. The key distinction is a strong adherence to the underlying mechanisms of human intelligence, as opposed to whatever works or dramatic simplifications common to AI.
One of my academic advisors use to speak of "artifical stupidity". True enough, humans don't seem terribly intelligent at times. But, we got a few things over computers at this point. Cognitive modelling is also likely to provide a much greater benefit the humanity at large in the near term via intelligent interfaces and human augmentation, compared to the relatively small number of problems that are tractably solved by today's AI.
So get to it! The leading cognitive modelling environment, ACT-R is available as a standalone app for Windows and a java app.
