Site Structure
The Englebart paper award winner at HT'03 introduced the notion of examining the directory structure of a site to provide insight into it's nature (PDF).In general, classifying links as downward, sideways, and up within a site may have the potential to aid user navigation. The distribution of these types of links as well as offsite link density can provide insight into the type of site.
This is useful for search and discovery systems, but how might this information be tapped for user understanding?
The distribution of such links is described in screenshots at webdesignpractices.com.
